Two local grassrooots teams played their Annual Football Remembers Friendly Game this weekend to commemorate the World War 1 Xmas truce when Soldiers laid down their arms to play a game of football in no mans land. The players observed in a minutes silence which was even more poignant following the tragedy in Brazil last week. The action involved 30 youngsters from Hawks Torcida and Mawsley Hurricanes in their annual game which was played in the spirit of true friendship that exists between the clubs. The game took place at Hawks home ground at Kettering Sports and Cricket Club. A good crowd watched the teams plays 3 really close matches with some great football and some great goals. Spectators enjoyed mince pies and mulled wine and all the funds donated on the day will go the the Weetabix League Give A Gift fund for underprivileged children. James Bambridge of Hawks FC said " it was a great day and shows what grassroots football is all about . The FA launched this as a one off event a couple of years ago for the 100th anniversary of the Xmas Truce game but we have decided to make an annual event of it . All of us players , coaches and supporters have always got on so well with the guys at Mawsley and it was a pleasure to host this years event plus see some great football and goals from both teams." James Geddes of Mawsley FC said " I am so proud of all the players - both on and off the field they did themselves them proud yesterday."
